5 Socially Conscious Coffee Companies for a Meaningful Morning Cup

At Coletti, there's only one thing more important to us than providing you with the best coffee making equipment possible: helping people in need. Our humanitarian efforts (which you can read more about below) are a crucial part of Coletti's coffee culture and, thankfully, we're not the only coffee company who feels that way.

Here are just a few amazing coffee companies that are committed to making your morning cup a little more meaningful.

1. Three Avocados

We might take it for granted, but clean water is not something that everyone around the world has access to. In fact, 783 million people worldwide don't know when they'll have water that's safe to drink.

Three Avocados is a non-profit organization founded in February of 2010 as a creative solution to ending the global water crisis, starting with Uganda. The company aims to offer coffee lovers a socially responsible choice when choosing delicious coffee (their grounds have a lovely hint of dark chocolate, which we love.)

100% of the money earned from coffee sales goes towards building water projects in Uganda or providing education in Nicaragua. Purchases between $0.50 and $3.00 provide clean water to a family in need and only four bags of coffee can give one person clean water for life.

2. Vega Coffee

When you buy grounds at the store or online, you might not realize the complicated process it took to get that coffee into your cup. It typically takes 20 middlemen and six months to get coffee to consumers — and the worst part is that it actually hurts almost everyone involved, from the coffee farmers to the consumer.

While the middlemen often make a massive profit, the farmers barely earn enough from their crops to get by. According to Forbes, farmers of specialty grade coffee beans earn just $1 a pound for a product that costs U.S. consumers around $20.

But Vega is striving to change that. Their model connects coffee farmers directly with coffee lovers by getting coffee grounds from point A to point B with the maximum amount of social consciousness.

The Nicaragua-based company has placed their distribution center within 30 minutes of the farmers; after roasting, the coffee will be shipped to the U.S., broken down, and mailed to consumers. Farmers get paid when the processing is done and the whole thing results in farmers earning four times what they usually do.

3. Buena Vida Coffee

This wonderful company supports an amazing cause: the Sociedad Amigos de los Niños, headed by Sister Maria Rosa Leggol. For every bag purchased, they provide one meal to one child at the Sociedad Amigos de los Niños orphanage in Honduras.

Over the last 40 years, Buena Vida has helped care for over 40,000 Honduran children. Today's programs include:

- Over 60 homes for children ages 0-18
- HIV clinic
- Job Training Center
- Boys Farm
- Health Clinic
- Kindergarten
- Elementary School
- High School

4. The Agape Roasting Project

If you're a socially conscious coffee drinker, but your heart doesn't belong to any one specific cause, you'll love The Agape Roasting Project. Every quarter, the company gives 100% of its profits to a different charitable organization.

Over $1,000 in coffee sales are donated every quarter to benefit children with disabilities, victims of sexual assault, and homelessness. This quarter, all profits will go to Camp Courage; a camp to support children living and coping with cancer.

5. Coletti Coffee

And, of course, we would be remiss if we didn't mention our own charitable pursuits here at Coletti! Our mission is to fund people and initiatives that are working hard to end human trafficking. Since we started in January of 2016, we're able to report that today 100% of our profits are going to those efforts.

Those funds are supporting people like our friend – let's call her Ana – who is rescuing young women from the bondage of human trafficking, placing them in loving homes, helping them complete their education, and providing training to prevent other women from being trafficked.

Visit the section on our website titled, “Our Mission” to read more about Ana, how we strive to positively impact the coffee culture, and learn about some of the girls we've had the privilege to help.

If you want to help, too, investing in any of our Coletti products (like our Bozeman Percolator or our Vienna Pour Over Dripper set) is a small way to improve the lives of thousands of people around the world.
