Hello, Robusta Bean
As us coffee devotees know, there is plenty to love about a good cup of joe. There's the taste — it's something you might not love as a kid when you first take a sip out of mom or dad's mug, but that symphony of smells and flavors quickly becomes associated with joy and energy. Then, there is the 'comforting feeling of routine' coffee can bring. Knowing that each day can start off with a bang is reason enough to get out of bed.
But there is another reason coffee is the most popular drink in American. You probably already guessed it -- that burst of energy one gets from the morning (or afternoon!) brew. Most regular coffee gets its natural perkiness from that little thing called caffeine, a compound found in coffee beans that acts as a stimulant to your nervous system. Basically, it's the reason for every "Don't Talk to Me Before I've Had My Coffee" meme you've ever seen. And the Robusta bean has lots of it.
Caffeine is ideal for keeping away a chemical that makes us inherently sleepy, called adenosine.
According to SlumberWise:
"The effect of coffee and its caffeine is to block the effects of adenosine on your brain. It also increases the flow of stimulation chemicals, including acetylcholine, epinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, glutamate, norepinephrine, cortisol, and endorphins.
Caffeine is able to have such a profound effect because it is both water-soluble and fat-soluble. This allows it to cross easily from the blood stream straight into your brain. Once there, caffeine can get to work."
Besides keeping you awake and alert all day long, you get many unexpected benefits from caffeine in your diet — which is one of the many reasons we're incredibly excited to announce our forthcoming roast!
Coming soon to our Product Page is a brand new blend, one which uses a special mix of Robusta beans. And, if you're a coffee-lover who's not familiar with the infamous Robusta bean, you're in for a serious treat.
Robusta beans are some of the most highly caffeine beans in the entire world, which is why most roasts don't use 100% Robusta for their grounds. (We love caffeine and that's too much, even for us.) Despite the incredible energy boost a Robusta can give, there are some critics who take issue with the bean, thinking it a cheaper, lower quality version of Arabica beans. But, truthfully, the two types are extremely different and offer their own pros and cons.
Here are just a few reasons why we love Robusta roasts:
1. The Robusta Bean is Perfect for Camping
The new roast we're currently working on is specifically a camping roast. And why would we use Robusta beans for camping-friendly grounds? Because the intense caffeine levels make this blend the ideal rugged, early morning hunter and camper drink.
Let's just say you won't have to slog through three cups of coffee before you feel the effects of this brew! You can easily make a small batch in one of our "Bozeman" percolators and be completely caffeinated for your day, ready to enjoy everything the great outdoors has to offer.
2. The Flavor is Deliciously Bold
The critics of the Robusta might argue that the smell and taste of the beans are a little too bold. Personally, we love the intense flavor the bean has to offer; and -- it's my guess -- you will agree.
But if you're someone who's a little wary of your coffee reeking of burnt rubber, don't worry — remember how we said this is only a partial Robusta blend? We did that for a reason! Our blend will contain a special mix of Robusta, so you get to experience the benefits of extra caffeine without being overwhelmed.
3. There are Antioxidants Galore
People who are passionate about fitness and health love Robusta beans! This is partly because of their extra caffeine and partly because of the incredible antioxidants in a Robusta roast.
Robusta beans have 25% - 80% more chlorogenic acid (CGA) than your average Arabica beans. CGA is wonderful for reducing inflammation both inside and out, as most antioxidants are. This can help with joint pain, skin issues, weight loss, and even preventing diabetes.
4. And, Of Course, the Extra Caffeine
Arguably the biggest pro is, naturally, the extra caffeine that you get from Robusta beans. There's a reason this type of bean makes for a fantastic, strong shot of espresso!
Robusta beans contain almost twice as much caffeine as Arabica (2.7% versus 1.5%), which is typically around 10% of their dry weight compared with 5% to 8% for Arabica coffee. This allows you to get the most out of your blend (less coffee can get you far, which means you have to buy grounds less often,) and get an intense kick energy that Arabica simply cannot offer.
If you have never tried Robusta before, it might be time. Arabica beans are certainly wonderful, but part of being a true coffee aficionado is trying different beans, roasts, and techniques to expand your palate and mind.
